The Spring Loaded Tensiometer uses a tensioning method based on the fact that the force required to deflect a given span length by a given amount is related to the tension of the belt. Because V-belts operate on the friction principle, multiplied by the mechanical advantage of the wedging principle, proper tensioning of v-belts is the single most important factor necessary for long, satisfactory operation.

Too little tension will result in slippage, causing rapid belt and sheave wear, and loss of productivity. Too much tension can result in excessive stress on belts, bearings, and shafts and reduced efficiency. In addition to proper belt tensioning, care should be exercised regarding sheave groove wear and alignment, as these factors also play an important part in achieving long, trouble-free service of your belt drives.

The Carlisle Frequency-Finder allows simple, fast and reliable tensioning on virtually any type of belt.

It works on the principle of forced vibration. When the free span of a belt is plucked, it vibrates at its “natural” frequency. The Frequency-Finder consists of a
hand-held laser sensor that precisely measures this natural frequency which is mathematically related to the static tension of the belt.

Sheave condition and alignment are vital to v-belt life and performance. New v-belts should never be installed without a thorough inspection of the sheaves. Particular attention should be given to wobbling sheaves, a shiny groove bottom and worn groove sidewalls. Use the sheave gauge to accurately check grooves for wear. A flashlight held behind the template when placed in the groove will help you to observe the amount of wear. Wear should not exceed 1/32" for individual v-belts or 1/64"for banded v-belts.

A shiny groove bottom is a sign that the belt or sheave or both are badly worn and the belt is bottoming in the groove. Worn sheaves or shiny sheave bottoms will show up first on the smaller sheave. The cost of replacing a worn sheave will be more than recovered in longer belt life, reduced maintenance and downtime.

Carlisle Power Transmission is pleased to add the SheaveMaster to our toolbox of installation and tensioning tools. The SheaveMaster is a laser tool for fast and accurate alignment of belt drive pulleys. The SheaveMaster is magnetically mounted against the side of one of the pulleys and three magnetic targets are placed against the top, bottom and side of the opposite pulley. The laser-line projected from the end of the tool onto the targets allows the user to quickly correct angular, offset and twist misalignment between the pulleys.

Only one person is needed to perfectly align your drives! SheaveMaster is water, dust and shock proof. The laser is permanently calibrated and can be used indoors or out.
